In the last segment of the Sea Dog’s story, the men were having a jolly celebration at an inn.

“Now, a storytelling competition,” the captain announced. “The best story wins a gold ring.” The contestants lined up in order, and each one told his best story, causing roars of laughter or gasps of horror by turn. But nobody had as good a story as Bill, who was the last to take the floor.

“I knew a dog once,” he said, “who was the darndest thing I ever seen.” He told of the Sea Dog’s adventures, beginning with how he lost his eye and ending with how he lost his leg.

When he ended his tale, a grizzled old farmer leaned his chair back, wiped his mouth, and spoke. “Naw,” he said. “It ain’t true. No dog ever done such deeds.”

With that, Bill gave a low whistle, and the Sea Dog loped over to him on his three legs, his bandage still in place. “It is, too! And here’s the dog right here!” Sparky gave a resounding “woof!” as if to second that statement.

With that, the whole crowd rushed to embrace the Sea Dog and tell him what a fine animal he was, and Bill won the gold ring amidst much back slapping. “That has got to be the world’s most interesting dog right there,” the skeptical farmer said to Bill.

In time, Sparky’s wound healed, and time flew as he went on voyage after voyage with Bill. The seafaring duo became famous for their exploits and adventures, and in time, Bill himself became the captain of the ship. Their fame and fearlessness spread far and wide, and when the two of them were together, it seemed there was nothing they couldn’t do.

However, nothing would have prepared them for what would befall them on a seemingly innocent trip ashore to replenish their ship’s supply of fresh water at a remote island.

Bill and Sparky were at the spring, absorbed in filling a barrel. Two other men had just departed, carrying their now-full barrel of water back to the ship, and two more were coming back towards them, but the thick underbrush momentarily hid them from view. Suddenly, a number of rough hands snatched Bill from behind, gagged him, and dragged him away through the jungle, writhing and struggling to get free. Sparky would have barked the alarm, but the strangers threw a heavy canvas bag over him, tied it in a knot, and slung it over their shoulder.

Their shipmates didn’t discover their disappearance right away in the confusion of drawing water. Finally, when everyone was back at the ship, all the sailors looked around and said to each other, “Where’s Cap’n?”

“I thought he was with you,” the first two men said.

“No, we left him filling a barrel, and we figured he would come back with you,” the other two answered. Suddenly, a dark and sinister feeling fell over them, and with heavy hearts they retraced their steps to the spring, where they found the clear signs of a tussle and a body being dragged through the vegetation.

The day was drawing toward dusk, and the men stood, indecisive as to what they should do. On the one hand, their impulse was to follow the track immediately. On the other hand, they had insufficient weapons, no light, and no way to get word to the rest of their companions on the ship.

In our dalmatian’s last adventure, a gang of pirates had just feasted on the beach and managed to drink an entire barrel of rum. But when the captain said, “Come, let us to bed, and we’ll be off in the morning,” things were not even close to winding down for the evening.

A surly fellow with a gruff voice muttered a complaint under his breath. “Can’t you see we’re enjoying ourselves for once?” Then a second man replied, “Aw, Bill, listen to the cap’n, now, there’s a good lad.”

Bill jumped to his feet, eyes blazing. “I’ll be off to bed when I’m good and ready, sir,” he roared. Instantly, every man jumped to his feet, chose sides, and the fight was on. Fists flew in every direction. Most of the men were not angry with each other; they were just enjoying the excuse for pummeling each other and contesting each other’s strength a bit. It was a rollicking good time, and they continued until they were weary. One by one, the men staggered to the side, panting and willing for a rest.

Only when most of the men had worn themselves out did they realize that Bill and his antagonist were still at it in earnest. Bill was a much bigger guy than his opponent, Abel, but Abel was quick and wiry and darted in and out, ducking and dodging Bill’s punches while landing blows of his own with lightning fast motion.

“Aw, call it off, you two,” a couple of the men called lazily toward them. “We’ve had our fun and games, now just quit harassing each other.” The two assailants showed no signs of stopping, and the men sitting on the sidelines were quickly falling prey to the sway of sleep. Some were already snoring on the sand.

However, Bill’s fury increased with every solid blow that Abel landed on his jaw. Swinging blindly at Abel with all his might, he couldn’t seem to vent his frustration, but it built and bottled until something snapped. Bill spied a sword nearby. Quick as a flash, he grabbed it and advanced toward Abel, motioning threateningly with the sword. One of the shipmates quickly tossed Abel another sword, and now the duel had turned deadly.

The Sea Dog sensed Bill’s rage and knew it was time to act. Barking furiously, he charged at the two men, intent on forcing them to stop. Fearless of the swords, he snarled and snapped and growled as he drove himself between the two of them to move them apart. Abel, surprised at this new turn of events, backed off. Bill, however, still intoxicated by fury, took advantage of the brief lapse of Abel’s aggressive offense to drive his sword straight towards Abel’s heart. Only the Sea Dog saw it coming. Before Abel had time to react, the Sea Dog had thrust himself in Abel’s way.

The point of the sword caught him right in the eye. With a loud yelp, he fell to the sand. Suddenly, Bill realized what he had done.

Arrr, Matey! The Ol’ Sea Dog here! In our last adventure, the valiant Sea Dog had rescued his mates from the invincible Iron Jaw, and upon reaching the nearest port, the crew immediately traded their vessel for a good price to an unsuspecting group of adventurers who were on their own quest to take down the famed, often-hooked, never-landed sea creature.

“She’s a beauty,” the sailors boasted of their custom rigging to capture the fabled monster. “We even hooked her…” and they lowered their voices and whispered, “but she got away.” The new owners failed to observe that the “she” meant the ship herself.

“We’re not only going to catch that monster--we’re going to catch ourselves a mermaid, too,” the new owners of the schooner boasted. And they set off with the Sea Dog aboard.

The sailors were in jolly spirits as they set sail for the fabled site of the beautiful sirens. None of them heeded the warnings of ships who passed near that part of the sea, never to return.

When they were still a day’s journey from their destination, the sailors heard an intoxicating sound. Faint music reached their ears, and it was the sweetest song any of them had ever heard. Even the Sea Dog perked up his ears at the melodious strains wafting over the breeze to their ship.

Night fell, and suddenly the music seemed to be coming from the east, then from the south, then from the west, then from the south again, then from the north. Strangely, the sailors could no longer see the stars, and while they constantly steered the ship towards the sound of the music, they could never be sure if they were taking a straight course or a circular one. It was as if they had sailed into a thick fog without even realizing it, and their sense of direction became just as skewed as their judgment as they frantically pursued the noise of singing that grew ever stronger as the hours passed.

Finally exasperated with this suspected meandering, the ship’s navigator struck a light and looked at the compass. Even the compass, however, seemed to be broken, for no matter which way he turned himself about, the compass pointed only to the direction the music was coming from, as if a stronger pull than the earth’s magnetic field was acting upon the needle.

Dawn came, bringing dim light but no visibility. They were cloaked in mist, and they were drawing nearer to the singing.

Sea Dog: Don't Bring a Fly Rod to a Sword Fight

Continued from our last blog post

The sailors cast again and again at the great fish as he led them forward, always staying just out of reach as if he was playing with them. Finally, on a cast that the men felt was especially magnificent, the fish took the bait. A great cheer went up from every throat, but it quickly died away when the fish began to swim away, taking the boat on a wild ride.

The men frantically tried to draw in the line, but even with all the sailors hauling at once, they had no hope of overcoming the great fish’s power. Sometimes he would slack his tremendous pace and allow them to haul the rope a short distance, drawing their ship closer and closer to him. Then he would race away at a tremendous pace, causing the rope to give the ship a jerk that toppled even the most agile seaman onto his face.

“What must we do?” the men cried out.

“The only thing we can do. Cut the rope!” the captain ordered.

But when they attempted to hack the rope in two, the best blade on the ship was no match for it. The fish had worked its magic on the rope, and they were bound fast.

This journey went on for 5 days until the men were exhausted.

Finally, the fish turned about, swam up to the side of the ship, and spoke.

“I demand to see the captain,” the monster demanded.

Aghast at meeting a talking fish, the men fell back from the starboard of the ship.

Just then, the Sea Dog leaped from the ship onto the head of the fish, snarling and snapping. The great sea creature, unused to such treatment and surprised at such a maneuver, paused, confused. Grasping the hook in his teeth, the Sea Dog whipped it out of sea monster’s iron jaw with one deft flick of his jaws, thereby releasing the boat and its crew from their captivity. The magic spell was broken, and the creature submerged itself below the surface, leaving our hero paddling in the water.

“Man overboard!” the men cried, and quickly lowered the lifeboat to rescue their beloved Sea Dog.

And thus the Iron Jaw lived to see another day, and the men escaped with their lives and a story that grew with each retelling. Predictably, the Sea Dog went on to have another adventure.

Arrr, Matey! The Ol’ Sea Dog, at yer service! Draw up a chair close to the fire, matey, pour yerself a pint, and listen to the Old Sea Dog’s rollicking adventure in the South Pacific with the legendary and elusive sea creature, the Iron Jaw.

What’s that you say? You never heard of the fearsome Iron Jaw, the creature eternally hunted, often hooked, but never landed? Then sit a spell, matey and hear all about it.

After the old Sea Dog hopped off the ship of good Sir Francis Drake, he leaped aboard a schooner headed for the South Pacific. The sailors were merchants and traders and adventurers, and it wasn’t long before they began to hear tales of an elusive sea monster that lurked in the sea, a giant fish that tended to intoxicate men everywhere with the thrill of the pursuit. Often, men had hooked this prize specimen, but somehow, he always got away.

With the Sea Dog aboard, the men on the schooner quickly felt their luck shift for the better, and their optimism reached a high pitch. They would be the ones to succeed in catching this monster and bring home the glory that no others had been able to achieve. Stories abounded of this creature demanding a ransom from anyone who hooked him, from gold to ancient relics, and one poor ship’s crew had even been forced to improvise a giant waterproof cigar to toss to the Iron Jaw.

These men, however, were sure their fate would be different. The sailors had prepared a huge hook and massive line on a launching mechanism that was tied to the bow of the ship, and they were confident in their pursuit.

Not many days into the open sea, the men spotted a fin rising from the sea. It would have been easily mistaken for a common fish if it were not for the fact that it was enormous. Easily large enough to swallow a man, this fish rose slowly out of the sea and eyed the sailors as if to challenge them. Thus, the chase was on.

Commemorate your own Iron Jaw exploits with the Sea Dog t-shirt today.

Our hero, the Sea Dog, was riding the proud waves of the open sea with Captain Francis Drake, and he was soon going to bequeath to him his name.

The Original Sea Dog: Bathed in Tradition - Soaked in History

Every time the good ship encountered an enemy, the sailors could not help but notice the brave Sea Dog sniffing the wind at the prow of the ship. Friends and foe alike termed him and his boat, “the Sea Dog ship,” and his fame grew so quickly that even the captain came to be known by the presence of his furry companion. The nickname “Sea Dog” stuck, and it seemed that his presence brought good luck to the safety and success of his expeditions.

Sailor after sailor came home with reports of the incredible feats of bravery of the “Sea Dog,” and soon it grew to be in common use for not only the ship and its mates, but even their friends and fellow-soldiers on other ships, until all the bravest pirates of that whole generation became known as the “Sea Dogs.”

Before long, even Queen Elizabeth was hearing of the fame of the mysterious “Sea Dog,” and naturally supposing that it was the captain of the good ship, she knighted him for his exploits and awarded him a coat of arms.

Truly, the Sea Dog basked in the glory of the pomp and splendor that was awarded to his friends, never asking for a scrap of it, but content with his food and drink and a good chap to curl up next to when times were slow.

And no one seemed to notice how long the Sea Dog was living or think to wonder why. But before too many years had passed, the Sea Dog leaped off the ship when they reached a port and went on to his next adventure.

Poor Francis Drake’s luck did seem to run out after that. He failed to conquer the port of Las Palmas, and shortly thereafter, he lost the Battle of San Juan.

But the Sea Dog lived on, and he has many an adventure yet to tell, not the least of which is how he made it onto a t shirt. Stay tuned for the story of the Sea Dog and the Legendary Iron Jaw!

Arrrr, Matey! The ol’ Sea Dog here, at your service. Ready for a new yarn, are ye? Well, now, get your comfiest tshirt, pull up a chair to the fire, and hear the story about how the old Sea Dog gave his name to one of the fiercest, bravest, swashbucklin’ sea captains and pirates that the sea ever knew.

The Sea Dog, as we left him, was being happily entertained by the queen of the island of eternal youth. They ate and drank at the biggest banquet feasts you could ever wish to see, yet the thrill of adventure still stirred in the young dog’s heart.

After many days, the lady of the island said, “Hark! A boat approaches. You, my brave Sea Dog, must go on with your adventures. Though you embark on many voyages, you will never know fear. Onward, then! Fulfill your mission well.” And with that, the lady cast our friend the Sea Dog adrift on a small raft and blew with her enchanted breezes until the raft reached the ship.

A murmur of surprise rose from all the sailors to see such a sleek and well-fed creature upon a raft in what they thought was the middle of the open sea. They brought our hero aboard, never guessing that of all the plunder and Spanish gold and booty and spoil that they would ever encounter, this was the richest gift that ever crossed their path.

“What have you there?” the captain asked. And lo and behold, it was none other than the famous Sir Francis Drake. For many a day, they sailed and plundered and fought battles and won for themselves riches. In every fight, the Sea Dog was there to give them courage. The men’s hearts grew bold when they saw the Sea Dog rush in to the fray, barking and snapping and growling without so much as a helmet, dodging sword swings left and right, always the first to enter the battle and the last to withdraw.

If you missed the beginning of the Legend of the Old Sea Dog, our hero, the beloved Sea Dog, was in trouble. His ship and crew had been blown by a tremendous storm in their quest to reach the enchanted island of eternal youth.

The legend of the old Sea Dog (part 2)

At the end of a fortnight, only two men were left on the ship with the Sea Dog, and the morning dawned bright and clear after the storm. The enchanted isle appeared just at the edge of the horizon! And yet, the sea was as calm as glass, with not even a puff of breeze to help their limping vessel along. Crazed with the thrill of being so close, the men took to the oars, despite their weakened frames. For eight long hours, they rowed, wheezing and gasping, until one of the men finally gave up the ghost just a few furlongs from the land.

The other looked up and saw a beautiful maiden in a red dress standing on the shore--the queen of the enchanted island of eternal youth--and he redoubled his efforts. And yet, the few furlongs were just too much of a match for his strength. At the very last minute, just before the boat reached the shallow water near the beach, he gasped for breath, clutched at his heart, and breathed his last, a valiant act that would be immortalized centuries later on a t-shirt.

The boat floated gently to the shore, and the Sea Dog hopped out, wagging his tail to greet the queen of the enchanted isle.

“Welcome, brave sailor,” she said. “You have attained the island of eternal youth. Drink, my friend, from yonder stream, and then let me entertain you in my palace for the day. For your valor in reaching my splendid realms, I bequeath to you these gifts: You will be eternally full of meat, all who meet you will love you and speak well of you, and your presence will increase the joy and laughter of those who know you.” And the Sea Dog did as she bid him.
